Snapchat is releasing augmented-reality (AR) glasses to give some content creators digital creations in the world around them.
In this case AR is a mixture of computer graphics, such as 3D models covered over the real world.
However, the new version of the "Spectacles" product is simply not available to anyone.
Instead, the company is offering AR in their “selected group builders” group.
Snapchat phones are known as AR "lenses", which allow a user to take a selfie or distort a live image in a variety of ways.
The new glasses are an evolution from that idea, giving lens makers the opportunity to project their creations into the world around them. Earlier versions of Spectacles focused on cameras for capture - the AR display is new to the latest release.
Examples the company showed included a digital projection of neon sea creatures on a real-world beach, an art gallery created on the street, and a guide with advanced visuals of the landscape.
Inside, the new technology includes two cameras, four microphones and stereo speakers and is powered by a chip that is specifically tuned for AR and VR. However, it only has a battery life of 30 minutes.
For now, they will only be available on application by the creators of Snapchat lenses, using the company’s Lens Studio desktop software, a tool for creating 3D-modeled AR experiences.
That strategy of limited release is not new.
The first version of Spectacles was released through a limited pop-up vending machine by the company Snap Inc. behind Snapchat that helped create a marketing goose around the concept.
It later sold them online as a regular product - but a year later, the first edition paid Snap Inc. অর্থ 40m (m 30m). It compares Google's failed "smart glasses" test with Google Glass.
